STAKE LAND

Stake Land is a 2010 post-apocalyptic road movie set to the tune of vampirism. The film was conceived by apparent dynamic duo director Jim Mickle (Cold in July, We Are What We Are) and star Nick Damici (Late Phases) who both came together to pen the script. Connor Paolo (Mystic River), Kelly McGillis (Top Gun), and Danielle Harris (Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers) round out the rest of the cast. Martin (Paolo) finds himself in the care of Mister (Damici) after his family is brutally murdered before his eyes. Mister teaches Martin (possibly named after the George A. Romero movie, also about BLOODSUCKERS in Pennsylvania?) the ways of vampire hunting as they head north to the promised land of New Eden, encountering strangers along the way. Continue reading →

THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

The Purge has become an almost annual tradition, much like its promotional material implies. As Saw used to be to the Halloween season, The Purge has started to mark its territory as the 4th of July. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if they still have sequels up their sleeves to continue into “milking it” territory, but for now I’m OK with the yearly installments because they are (somehow) managing to keep this fantasy world fresh with new ideas. By now I’m sure the majority of people reading this already know what The Purge is about. One night out of the year the future government declares all crime legal in an effort to reduce crime for the remaining 364 days. From the trailers of these films alone one could easily write this trilogy off as torture porn with no substance and I would understand, but if they actually took the time to watch any one Purge film they would find a much deeper societal/political dialogue hidden behind the blood.

It’s finally here! Night 31! The holy grail of the MASSACRE MARATHON! This year’s end of the line features a more recent entry into the horror classics hall of fame: Saw. What started as a small Australian short film blossomed into a juggernaut of a franchise, becoming a yearly Halloween staple. There are seven films total, but for this special day we are only focusing on the first three.

When writer/director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell came together in 2004 to make Saw they created a sadistic masterpiece. It was one of those films I remember everybody talking about when it was released. My maker introduced it to me when I was still a young, unsullied Manster. He explained to me how he heard it wasn’t only a horror movie, but a crime mystery too.

Not expecting anything much from the fifth installment in the franchise, I snuggled up and got as comfy as I could get in my new electric chair to watch Halloween 5: Revenge of Michael Myers. From the get go the girl in the clown suit on the cover reminded me of the painful memories brought on by the last terrible movie. I figured this one can’t be any worse.

Battered and weak, the feeble Manster retreated to the woods to find a shred of solace. He had been typing for days on end. His claws were bloodied. His black heart was thumping wildly. He needed a rest badly. His captors were hot on his trail and he didn’t know where else to run. His energy ran out and he collapsed face first in the snow.

Months passed…

He was frozen solid but deep in his slumber he could still hear the sounds of the drills. They had come to bring him back…

I’m back baby! After October’s MASSACRE MARATHON I was beat but I have returned rested and rejuvenated with a brand new horror movie review of It Follows! A few weeks ago the hype for this limited release was frothing over the edge of the glass and it got me thinking that I might not get a chance to see It Follows if they don’t release it in regular nationwide theaters. So I decided to drive an hour and a half to the closest art house theater to sneak a peek. Two days later, the pot finally boiled over and It Follows went mainstream opening in every triple A theater from here to Transylvania. Just my luck! At least now I can be a hipster and say I saw it before it was cool.

The classic of camp, Sam Raimi’s prized possession, The Evil Dead kicked off this year’s Halloween MASSACRE MARATHON trilogy! That’s right! I am not only reviewing the masterpiece that launched Raimi’s career, I’m taking on both sequels that followed! First, I would like to thank everyone that stopped by this season, whether it was for one review or you’ve been following my whole horrific journey this past month. I’m obviously not making any money from this, I’m not promoting for some company, I’m doing the MASSACRE MARATHON for myself and for my readers! It’s great fun to have a whole month dedicated to my favorite genre of film, but it is also hard work writing reviews for every day in October. I am proud to announce this year is the first year I have successfully written a review for every day and every movie in the MASSACRE MARATHON and let me tell you it feels great looking at that calender and seeing every single DAMN DAY highlighted! ALL HALLOWS’ EVE

I have been trying to save the more directly Halloween-themed movies on my list to watch closer to the holiday. Now that the month is more than half over, I rented All Hallows’ Eve. This poster caught my eye when I was looking for upcoming horror releases last year. That clown is probably the scariest clown I have ever seen! The synopsis read like a copycat of V/H/S, so I figured it would be a decent flick.

HOUSE OF FEARS

Take a look at this poster and tell me if you would watch this movie. Unless you are unreasonably afraid of clowns (apparently this image would prove unsettling to people with Coulrophobia) the goofy devil-clown on this bill would indicate that House of Fears is a cheapest of the cheap Z-movie. And don’t even get me started on that terrible excuse for a tagline. Originally, I avoided it when Netflix recommended it.

Now what are your thoughts on this version? When skimming through connected horror films on IMDB earlier this month, I came across this picture. Pretty terrifying, am I right? So I read the synopsis and looked it up on Netflix to add to my list, when I found the first poster again. I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but that was exactly what I was doing at the time. I figured I’d add it anyway for MASSACRE MARATHON and if it sucks, it sucks.
