The Final Girls (not to be confused with Final Girl) is a comedy/horror film about the daughter, Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), of a washed up scream queen, Malin Akerman (Watchmen). Max always admired her mother’s work, even when Nancy didn’t herself. When Nancy passes away, Max agrees to make an appearance at a film festival showcasing her mother’s films. A disaster ensues and Max, along with a few friends, get magically transported into her mother’s movie “Camp Bloodbath”.
The Final Girls sets out to spoof of 80s slasher films and it gets the job done. The “filmworld” characters are all clichéd, unnatural, and very horny idiots, a staple in the genre. Adam Devine (Workaholics, Pitch Perfect) plays the sex-obsessed jock, and while I’m not usually a fan of his, he made a good effort. I was disgruntled when the funniest character, played by Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), was KILLED off early on. His comedic timing would have served the film well if used the whole way through. There are plenty of interesting set pieces littered throughout, riffing on not only horror movies but movies in general. I commend this solid production directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, his first proper film since A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, and co-written by Joshua John Miller (Homer from the classic Near Dark). Kum-Ba-YESSSSSS!
