Bone Tomahawk harkens back to times when men had nothing better to do than go out in a blaze of glory. An age where someone would get shot down in the middle of the saloon and everyone would go about their business. An era where one minute you are practicing exquisite etiquette and the next you are showing the savages the dangerous end of your repeater, only to die a hero.
Under the Shadow is a 2016 horror film set in 1980’s war-torn Iran. A small family in a apartment building is coping with the already dangerous situation when an inexplicable presence starts to plague them. As if living in a frequently bombed city isn’t scary enough…
OK, so this isn’t promo material for Julia Ducournau’s 2016 French horror film Raw, but whatever this is for was probably more entertaining. The coming of age cannibal film received outstanding compliments on the festival circuit but did not live up to its praise. Don’t let that poster up there distract you from the rest of this review.
Just in time to swoop down and hoist me out of the pit of bad movies I was falling into comes The Girl with All the Gifts. A modern zombie movie from a younger infected girl’s perspective, TGWATG brings some new things to the genre. The 2016 British film is directed by Colm McCarthy and stars Gemma Arterton (The Voices, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes), and Glenn Close (too many to name).
Nicholas Winding Refn (Drive [high up on my favorites list], [the abysmal] Only God Forgives) and Cliff Martinez (ditto) have teamed up once again to bring forth a new movie featuring beautiful scenery, subtle themes, mesmerizing music, and, of course, actors taking long pauses to gaze into their colleague’s eyes before delivering their lines. The Neon Demon puts a magnifying glass up against the ROTTEN underbelly of the L.A. fashion industry and the obsessed models attempting to claw their way to the top. Elle Fanning’s (Super 8) sixteen-year-old new-in-town model Jesse starts off sweet and innocent but soon starts blossoming into something she can’t take back, leaving her to question how far she will go and if it is all really worth it. Welcome to MASSACRE MARATHON 2016! It seems to be a budding tradition that I must watch a comedy/horror out of New Zealand. Last year I started the celebrations with the excellent What We Do in the Shadows and tonight I kicked it all off with Housebound.
